Zheng He : China and the Oceans in the Early Ming Dynasty, 1405-1433

Description

This new biography, part of Longman's World Biography series, of the Chinese explorer Zheng He sheds new light on one of the most important "what if" questions of early modern history: why a technically advanced China did not follow the same path of development as the major European powers. Written by China scholar Edward L. Dreyer, Zheng He outlines what is known of the eunuch Zheng He's life and describes and analyzes the early 15th century voyages on the basis of the Chinese evidence. Locating the voyages firmly within the context of early Ming history, itaddresses the political motives of Zheng He's voyages and how they affected China's exclusive attitude to the outside world in subsequent centuries.

What transforms a look from on-trend to trendsetting? Editor-in-Chief Christene Barberich and Executive Creative Director Piera Gelardi deconstruct their favorite outfits to reveal what trailblazing looks like on the real-life fashion front, including: It is accompanied by an introduction by Adam Thirwell discussing the novel's themes, extraordinary style and influence. Andrei Bely (1880-1934), born Boris Nikolaevich Bugaev, was educated at Moscow University where he studied science and philosophy, before turning his focus to literature. In 1904 he published his first collection of poems, Gold in Azure, which was followed in 1909 by his first novel, The Silver Dove. Bely's most famous Zheng He : China and the Oceans in the Early Ming Dynasty, 1405-1433 download PDF novel, Petersburg, was published in 1916. His work is considered to have heavily influenced several literary schools, most notably Symbolism, and his impact on Russian writing has been compared to that of James Joyce on the English speaking world. If you enjoyed Petersburg, you might like Ivan Turgenev's Fathers and Sons, also available in Penguin Classics. 'The one novel that sums up the whole of Russia' Anthony Burgess

The CSA Cookbook: No-Waste Recipes for Cooking Your Way Through a Community Supported Agriculture Box, Farmers' Market, or Backyard Bounty

Description

Make the most of your CSA membership - or your garden harvest - with simple yet bold, inventive yet nourishing meals from acclaimed blogger Linda Ly.Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) programs have connected farms to consumers and made people more in tune with where their food comes from, but still leave many stumped beyond the conventional uses for their produce. How many times has a CSA share arrived with things you've never seen before or not known what to do with?"The CSA Cookbook" will help you cook your way through a CSA box (or farmers' market or backyard bounty) with 105 seasonal recipes that utilize every edible part of the plant, from leaves and flowers to stems and seeds. Think of it as a nose-to-tail approach - for vegetables! With innovative ideas for preparing the lesser-known but no-less-delicious parts of plants, tips for using the odds and ends of vegetables, and easy preservation techniques, Linda Ly helps you get from farm to table without a fuss. Chapters include tomatoes and peppers, leafy greens, peas and beans, bulbs and stems, roots and tubers, melons and gourds, and flowers and herbs. You'll find globally-inspired, vegetable-focused recipes that turn a single plant into several meals - take squash, for instance. This year-round vegetable brings a variety of tastes and textures to the table: Squash Blossom and Roasted Poblano Tacos, Sicilian Squash Shoot Soup, Autumn Acorn Squash Stuffed with Kale, Cranberries, and Walnuts, and Toasted Pumpkin Seeds. If you grow your own food at home, you might be surprised to learn you can eat the leaves from your pepper plants, or pickle the seed pods from your radishes."The CSA Cookbook" aims to inspire curiosity in the garden and creativity in the kitchen. You'll look at vegetables in a whole new way and think twice before you discard your kitchen "scraps"!"One of my favorite sayings is, 'Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without.' What appeals to me about this phrase is the idea that everything is useful. And that's why I like "The CSA Cookbook "so much. Many of Linda's dishes utilize the oft-discarded parts of vegetables such as tomato leaves, radish greens, and carrot tops. More than just being efficient, these recipes encourage us to explore the flavors and uses of every edible part of a plant. This book will completely change the way you look at vegetables." - P. Allen Smith, author of "P. Allen Smith's Seasonal Recipes from the Garden"""The CSA Cookbook" shows you how to use everything your vegetables offer, whether they come from your CSA or your garden. After all, why throw away what's edible when it can offer so much in the kitchen?" - Deborah Madison, author of "Vegetable Literacy: Cooking and Gardening with Twelve Families from the Edible Plant Kingdom"

Delving into the more supernatural and esoteric areas of Gotham City, the 6-part storyline explores the horrific murder of one ofBruce Wayne's childhood friends...and the terrible ramifications the brutal crime has on Batman's life. It is a solemn time for the New Republic, as the merciless Yuuzhan Vong continue their campaign of destruction. The brutal enemy has unleashed a savage creature capable of finding--and killing--Jedi Knights. And now Leia Organa Solo faces a terrible ultimatum. If the location of the secret Jedi base is not revealed within one week, the Yuuzhan Vong will blast millions of refugee ships into oblivion. " This book tells the stories of these three infamous serial killers against the backdrop of the tabloid frenzy that surrounded them. Once upon a time there was a Chef called Heston who opened a small restaurant called the Fat Duck. At first, he served only simple French classics but gradually, as is the way of things, the Chef's curiosity got the better of him and he began thinking up more unusual dishes, such as Snail Porridge and Chocolate Wine. There was even talk of a meringue that made diners snort plumes of vapour, like a dragon. Word spread and reached the ears of the Executives who ran a television channel, and they summoned the Chef to their glass fortress. 'We command you to create six Fantastical Feasts', they said. 'These must be based on history, but you may draw on fairytales and legends. We should warn you that the Quest will involve journeys to Transylvania in search The CSA Cookbook: No-Waste Recipes for Cooking Your Way Through a Community Supported Agriculture Box, Farmers' Market, or Backyard Bounty free pdf of the legendary Leech Recipe of Sibiu, and to the Black Forest to eat the eyes of the Wild Boar of Munstertal. You must resist the temptations of the Burlesque Girls, and you must turn chocolate cake into a raging fireball and chicken's testicles into jelly beans. There will be hunting for hallucinogenic mushrooms and cooking with Play-Doh. Out of this, you must create the most magical dishes imaginable'.

The Years of Lyndon Johnson: The Path to Power

Description

This is the story of the rise to national power of a desperately poor young man from the Texas Hill Country. The Path to Power reveals in extraordinary detail the genesis of the almost superhuman drive, energy, and ambition that set LBJ apart. It follows him from the Hill Country to New Deal Washington, from his boyhood through the years of the Depression to his debut as Congressman, his heartbreaking defeat in his first race for the Senate, and his attainment, nonetheless, at age 31, of the national power for which he hungered. In this book, we are brought as close as we have ever been to a true perception of political genius and the American political process. Means of Ascent, Book Two of The Years of Lyndon Johnson, was a number one national best seller and, like The Path to Power, received the National Book Critics Circle Award. "From the Trade Paperback edition."

Amazing Grace: William Wilberforce and the Heroic Campaign to End Slavery

Description

Amazing Grace tells the story of the remarkable life of the British abolitionist William Wilberforce (1759-1833). This accessible biography chronicles Wilberforce's extraordinary role as a human rights activist, cultural reformer, and member of Parliament. At the center of this heroic life was a passionate twenty-year fight to abolish the British slave trade, a battle Wilberforce won in 1807, as well as efforts to abolish slavery itself in the British colonies, a victory achieved just three days before his death in 1833. Metaxas discovers in this unsung hero a man of whom it can truly be said: he changed the world. Before Wilberforce, few thought slavery was wrong. After Wilberforce, most societies in the world came to see it as a great moral wrong. To mark the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the British slave trade, HarperSanFrancisco and Bristol Bay Productions have joined together to commemorate the life of William Wilberforce with the feature-length film Amazing Grace and this companion biography, which provides a fuller account of the amazing life of this great man than can be captured on film. This account of Wilberforce's life will help many become acquainted with an exceptional man who was a hero to Abraham Lincoln and an inspiration to the anti-slavery movement in America.

"The Swimming-Pool Library beautifully welds the standard conventions of fiction to a tale of modern transgressions. It tells of impurities with shimmering elegance, of complexities with a camp-fired wit and of truths with a fiction's solid grace."-- "New York Times Book Review

God Chicks: Living Life as A 21st Century Woman

Description

Holly Wagner believes it is no accident that you and I are alive and on the earth at this time in history...what an awesome privilege it is. Granted, terror is alive and real on the planet...but so are we and the purposes for which we have been placed here. The King of heaven is waiting for women to take their places on the earth ...we have a job to do. Proverbs 31:8-9 says it like this...we are to open our mouths for those who can't speak for themselves...open our mouths for those who are left defenseless...we are to judge righteously and administer justice. How can we do this if we are not confidently living our life as God's girl on the earth? In God Chicks, Holly encourages women to embrace their God-given roles, such as the Warrior Chick, the Friend Chick, and the Just b.u. Chick. "We are invaluable," says Holly, "and more women need to see themselves this way. We do not have to strive or force our way...we just have to confidently walk as we were created...daughters of a King."

Notes from Underground & Other Stories

Description

eng With an Introduction and Notes by David Rampton, Department of English, University of Ottowa. Notes from Underground and Other Stories is a comprehensive collection of Dostoevsky's short fiction. Many of these stories, like his great novels, reveal his special sympathy for the solitary and dispossessed, explore the same complex psychological issues and subtly combine rich characterization and philosophical meditations on the (often) dark areas of the human psyche, all conveyed in an idiosyncratic blend of deadly seriousness and wild humour. In Notes from Underground, the Underground Man casually dismantles utilitarianism and celebrates in its stead a perverse but vibrant masochism. A Christmas Tree and a Wedding recounts the successful pursuit of a young girl by a lecherous old man. In Bobok, one Ivan Ivanovitch listens in on corpses gossiping in a cemetery and ends up deploring their depravity. In A Gentle Spirit, the narrator describes his dawning recognition that he is responsible for his wife's suicide. In short, as a commentator on spiritual stagnation, Dostoevsky has no equal.

The Craw County Running Rebs are gearing up for the most important, and bloody, game of the year, and everyone in town has a stake in it. Six stories. Six bastards. One southern-fried crime series. By JASON AARON (THE GODDAMNED, Dr. Strange) and JASON LATOUR (Spider-Gwen, Loose Ends). Collects issues 9 through 14. Trust in Life 'A gripping, flawless novel ...memorable, atmospheric and chilling' Sophie Hannah Sixteen year old Shelley and her mother move to Honeysuckle cottage in the middle of the countryside, fleeing their fears and anxieties and hoping to put behind them years of suffering at the hands of others. Shelley has endured terrible bullying from the girls who used to be her best friends, and her mother has been left reeling following a Notes from Underground & Other Stories free download pdf divorce from her selfish, demanding husband. For Shelley and her mother are 'mice' -- timid, nervous and obliging. And for a while, in their cottage-haven, the women flourish. But one night, their fragile peace is shattered when Shelley wakes to hear a creak on the stairs. Someone has broken into the house ...In the shocking, chilling events that follow, Shelley's world is turned on its head, as the women find themselves tested as never before. And as their lives spiral out of control, the tension reaches fever pitch, and Shelley begins to wonder: if she and her mother are not mice after all, then what are they? 'Truly remarkable ...Mice is a book many will without question be talking about' Daily Express 'A sophisticated psychological thriller ...gripping' Guardian

Daniel Defoe,David Blewett: The Fortunes and Misfortunes of the Famous Moll Flanders

The Fortunes and Misfortunes of the Famous Moll Flanders

Description

Daniel Defoe's bawdy tale of a woman's struggle for independence and redemption, Moll Flanders is edited with an introduction and notes by David Blewett in Penguin Classics. Born in Newgate prison and abandoned six months later, Moll Flanders' drive to find and hold on to a secure place in society propels her through incest, adultery, bigamy, prostitution and a resourceful career as a thief ('the greatest Artist of my time') before her crimes catche up with her, and she is transported to the colony of Virginia in the New World. If Moll Flanders is on one level a Puritan's tale of sin and repentance, through self-made, self-reliant Moll, Daniel Defoe's rich subtext conveys all the paradoxes and amoralities of the struggle for property and power in the newly individualistic society of Eighteenth-century England. Based on the first edition of 1722, this volume includes a chronology, suggestions for further reading, notes on currency and maps of London and Virginia in the late seventeenth century. Daniel Defoe (1660-1731) had a variety of careers including merchant, soldier, spy, and political pamphleteer. Over the course of his life Daniel Defoe wrote over two hundred and fifty books on economics, history, biography and crime, but is best remembered for the fiction he produced in late life, which includes Robinson Crusoe (1719), Moll Flanders (1722) and Roxana (1724). Defoe had a great influence on the development of the English novel and many consider him to be the first true novelist. If you enjoyed Moll Flanders, you might like Samuel Richardson's Pamela, also available in Penguin Classics.

Nothing: A Very Short Introduction pdf

Frank Close: Nothing: A Very Short Introduction

Nothing: A Very Short Introduction

Description

What is 'nothing'? What remains when you take all the matter away? Can empty space - a void - exist? This Very Short Introduction explores the science and the history of the elusive void: from Aristotle who insisted that the vacuum was impossible, via the theories of Newton and Einstein, to our very latest discoveries and why they can tell us extraordinary things about the cosmos. Frank Close tells the story of how scientists have explored the elusive void, and the rich discoveries that they have made there. He takes the reader on a lively and accessible history through ancient ideas and cultural superstitions to the frontiers of current research. He describes how scientists discovered that the vacuum is filled with fields; how Newton, Mach, and Einstein grappled with the nature of space and time; and how the mysterious 'aether' that was long ago supposed to permeate the void may now be making a comeback with the latest research into the 'Higgs field'. We now know that the vacuum is far from being empty - it seethes with virtual particles and antiparticles that erupt spontaneously into being, and it also may contain hidden dimensions that we were previously unaware of. These new discoveries may provide answers to some of cosmology's most fundamental questions: what lies outside the universe, and, if there was once nothing, then how did the universe begin? ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

Battersby: Extraordinary Food from an Ordinary Kitchen

Description

Serve sophisticated, satisfying food--regardless of kitchen's size or scope--with recipes and advice from award-winning chefs Joseph Ogrodnek and Walker Stern of Brooklyn's Battersby and Dover fame. Ogrodnek and Stern cook stellar meals in their restaurant Battersby's small (4 x 6') open kitchen where they break boundaries with taste combinations and levels of flavor. To pull off world-class food in such tight quarters, they have developed systems of organization founded on a roster of dishes that are largely prepared in advance (sometimes days in advance) and finished just before serving. And that is how they have organized their first cookbook: each recipe is divided into "to prep" and "to serve" instructions. With over 140 recipes--from Crispy Kale Salad with Brussels Sprouts and Kohlrabi to Duck Breast with Quince and Radishes, from Corn Soup with Shrimp to Apricots with Honey and Sweet Ricotta--Battersby will make your meals memorable!

- What Have You Learned? page at the end of each theme "All runners wonder, at some point or another, why we do what we do. Mr. Inman's explanation is the best I've ever seen. And the funniest. Because he is clinically Battersby: Extraordinary Food from an Ordinary Kitchen free download pdf insane." Following a horrific bus crash in the Rocky Mountains on the way to a scouting jamboree, Sam Fox needs to find help, and fast! With no food, water or equipment, and with two young scouts in tow, Sam needs to keep his wits about him if he's planning on surviving the perils of the American wilderness. With a huge grizzly on his tail, a pack of wolves circling and some kind of half-human, half-animal always just out of sight, can Sam survive for long enough to raise the alarm and save the crash victims, or will this story come to a grizzly end?   With this book, you'll: study the full range of topics covered in first-year statistics; tackle tough statistical concepts using Head First's dynamic, visually rich format proven to stimulate learning and help you retain knowledge; explore real-world scenarios, ranging from casino gambling to prescription drug testing, to bring statistical principles to life; discover how to measure spread, calculate odds through probability, and understand the normal, binomial, geometric, and Poisson distributions; and conduct sampling, use correlation and regression, do hypothesis testing, perform chi square analysis, and more. Before you know it, you'll not only have mastered statistics, you'll also see how they work in the real world. "Head First Statistics" will help you pass your statistics course, and give you a firm understanding of the subject so you can apply the knowledge throughout your life.
